Repair and restoration of leather goods for all applications.

Our small company is a typical German leather worker’s workshop. We do only high quality manual work as once carried out in our grandfather’s days.

What qualifications are necessary ?

1.      Knowledge of the manufacture and use of different kinds of leather

2.      Skill in the manufacture of leather (saddler or bag maker)

 3.      Knowledges of the changes in leather after long-time storage or use

 4.      Empathy for old time craftsmanship

 5.      Skill and patience.

How to go about it ?

1st. step: Evaluate the damage and the scope of repairs

2 nd step:  Clean the leather, establishing the pH-value and dubbing the dry, porous pieces of leather.

3rd step:  Take apart defective pieces, remove old porous seams and clean stitch holes (needle, pincers).

4th step: Manufacture missing pieces.

 -         Measurements, if necessary to make molds

-         Selection of the leather (use vegetable tanned leather like the original, leather thickness is important)

-         Drawing

-         Cutting with a sharp Leather knife

-         Sharpening the small and narrow pieces (straps)

-    Cutting out the pieces to be stretched over wooden mold.

-     After drying, cutting the pieces to size and smoothing edges.

-     Dying the new pieces with leather corrosive fluid.

-     Dubbing the new pieces to improve the flexibility.

5th step: Preparation of the linen thread. Choosing the correct thickness as well as the proper size saddler needles. Coloring of the linen thread, matching the remaining original stitches.

6th step: Neatening of the single pieces with 2 needles (use old holes). When necessary, making new holes with a leather awl.

7th step: Final finish: new pieces will get a “used look“ matching the original pieces. with  cuts, cracks, wrinkles, patina and color differences. This is the “dot of the finish” and requires a lot of experience and knowledge.
